What Do We Know For Sure About Jesus?

Devotional – 25 Days

My favorite way to focus on the “red stuff” in the New Testament—the words of Jesus—is to ask a question I received from a popular magazine “What’s one thing you know for sure?” As a lifelong journalist, I’ve interviewed hundreds of people over the years, and I think this question is the best single interview question I’ve ever heard. So I co-opted this question, morphing it into this: “Based on this Scripture passage alone, what’s one thing I know for sure about Jesus?” Let’s read through one chapter from Matthew’s Gospel that’s loaded with red stuff—chapter 15—quickly determining what we know for sure about Jesus as we scan through the things he said and did. We’ll sometimes read the same passage but answer the question differently.

About The Publisher

Devotional: Jesus likes to answer questions with questions, especially in confrontational situations.

Matthew 15:1-3
Then the Pharisees and religious scholars came from Jerusalem and approached Jesus with this question: “Why do your disciples ignore the traditions of our elders?  For example, they don’t ceremonially wash their hands before they eat bread.”
Jesus answered, “And why do you ignore the commandment of God because of your traditions?

Devotional: Jesus is not afraid to “speak truth to power.”

Matthew 15:4-6
4 For didn’t God say, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever abuses or insults his father or mother must be put to death?’ 5 “But you teach that it’s permissible to say to your parents when they are in financial need, ‘Whatever gift you would have received from me I can keep for myself, since I dedicated it as an offering to God.’ 6 This doesn’t honor your father or mother.  And you have elevated your tradition above the words of God.

Devotional: Jesus is intent on smoking out hypocrisy whenever he smells the stink of it.

Matthew 15:7-9
Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said:
These people honor me only with their words, for their hearts are so very distant from me.
They pretend to worship me, but their worship is nothing more than the empty traditions of men.”

Devotional: Jesus uses Scripture as an anchor in contentious conversations.

Matthew 15:7-9
Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said:
These people honor me only with their words, for their hearts are so very distant from me.
They pretend to worship me, but their worship is nothing more than the empty traditions of men.”

Devotional: Jesus knows Scripture well enough to cite it in relevant circumstances.

Matthew 15:7-9
Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said:
These people honor me only with their words, for their hearts are so very distant from me.
They pretend to worship me, but their worship is nothing more than the empty traditions of men.”
